What is leadership?
Leadership is primarily two things more than any other.
- Solving Problems.
What is stopping us as an organization or as individuals from moving forward is the problems or obstacles that are in our way. It is the job of a leader to solve these problems… he must figure out a creative and unique solution to the problems that are impeding results.
It is never an issue of having resources such as time, money, network, etc that impedes us from achieving our goals in life.
For instance, many people think that in order to get big and strong you need state of the art gym equipment, fancy protein powders, a personal trainer, or steroids.
These resources certainly assist in building a great muscular physique… however they are not the bottleneck.
The bottleneck is the leaders creativity, resourcefulness, and willingness to execute on whatever it takes to make it over that hurdle.
2. Maximizing Resources.
Again, resources are not the issue. In todays society, we have more access to information and people than ever before. With faster speeds than ever before. Now a days you can access and contact almost anyone quickly and for free.
A good leader must look at what we already have as an organization and ensure that we use what we have in order to succeed.
Often times these are skills, emotions, or some creative way of mixing up the things that we do have in some unique way to get around the problem.
These are simply two meta-frames of leadership… but there are many many more ways of looking at what a leader really does In life, business, sports or wherever.
As a leader you must go first. Always… Ethically you cannot ask others to go do something that you are not willing to do…
For instance, if you have to hire and train sales people, yet you yourself are not a good closer or willing to learn how to close… you will never have the respect of your sales team nor will you be able to influence them in the way that you want.
Even if sales is your weakest point, you still as a leader have to OWN that part of your business and really focus on improving your skills.
Whatever your weaknesses are in business/life/fitness/relationship/family… you should be able to fix them to the degree that you can still achieve your goals despite having the weakness and also be able to train your people.
Possibly the most important part of leadership though is about influence.
Movement of human emotion to cause them to move to action.
In order to be good at influencing other people you must be good at influencing yourself first.
You must learn to emotionally move yourself to take action, or stay calm in the heat of the storm, or keep the focus of the company on what truly matters instead of reacting to the environment.
